For the Langstroth, we bought a velcro closed insulation pad designed for a deep frame - in our case- an 8-frame. For the horizontal top bar, we bought a roll of insulation from Home Depot and wrapped in a spiral.

We wrap our two hives. For our Langstroth, we wrap horizontally around the boxes - no insulation on the top or bottom. Similarly for our horizontal top-bar hive, we wrap around vertically across the length, leaving the end faces un-insulated. John Seibert

Enough of a colony to save is the next question. An adjacent hive lost it's queen. If this hive generates a queen, then there is a possibility of combining.
