Is it common to lose a colony to mite treatment?

After placing miteaway strips last fall, I had hundreds of dead larva and bees strewn all around my hive, mostly underneath where they had tossed out the larva. That colony never recovered and did not survive the winter. The colony seemed healthy and thriving prior to the mite treatment though. Is it possible I killed them by treating them?

That is hard to say. What was your mite count before and after treatments? MAQS is very temperature dependent. If it is too warm it will be hard on the bees and queen. I prefer to use MAQS in the Spring and a half dose. There are other effective options for Fall treatments. Whatever treatments you use, make sure you follow the manufactures instructions to the letter.
